University FOIL and Records Access Paralegal
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Paralegal to support the University FOIL and Records Access Officer (UFRAO) in managing complex, confidential, and time-sensitive Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) matters for a major public university system.
Your Tasks
Key Responsibilities
- Review FOIL requests for access to public records and ascertain the existence of requested materials
- Review records for responsiveness and relevance
- Perform legal research related to FOIL and records access matters
- Propose redactions of confidential information
- Draft written responses to FOIL requests
- Monitor and update GovQA tracking system
- Collaborate with University staff regarding records access and retention matters
- Liaise with the Office of Strategy and Policy Implementation, Office of the General Counsel, and college Legal Affairs designees
- Support records retention and disposition processes
- Perform administrative duties including scheduling meetings, managing calendars, and coordinating communications
Our requirements
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree required
- Minimum four (4) years of paralegal or legal assistant experience
- Strong legal research, writing, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to manage and analyze large volumes of documents
- Experience performing administrative support functions
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to manage competing priorities and meet strict deadlines
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, OneDrive, online legal research tools, and virtual platforms (Teams, Zoom)
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting FOIL or document review matters in higher education, government, law firm, or in-house legal department settings
- Paralegal Certification
- Experience working in public-sector or compliance-driven environments
- Strong project management and cross-department collaboration skills
